Tribute to Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, Special 1960 UK Tour, Jubilee Memorial Rock'n'Roll
At the initiative of Philippe Fessard were presented in the space of an extended week-end three concerts at Pagney (Meurthe et Moselle - 19 November), Pierrelaye (Val d'Oise - 20 November) and Etampes (Essonne - November 21 ) commemorating the Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran tour that began in January 24, 1960. Project that brought together friendly and welcome Thierry Le Coz, Erwin Travis and The New Virginians as performers. The year 2010 with the publication of two books and three concerts, will remain in France as the best Gene Vincent's year since long. The Etampes' theater built in the 19th century and having a capacity of about two hundred persons (ground floor + 2 balconies) was an ideal place to get closer to concert halls as they were still in the 50's and find the atmosphere of the tour organized by Larry Parnes, who unfortunately took the life of Eddie Cochran. At the entrance, we had the pleasure of receiving a small program which took over the presentation of the original and have the stand Thundersound Records where, besides a large selection of records, was presented the book / LP Gene Vincent "Tribulation a rocker in France and francophone countries" (Gareth McLean). An essential publication as is the recent book by John William Thoury "Gene Vincent - Dieu du Rock 'n Roll".
After a presentation by Marcel Rapp (acting as Master of Ceremony) and a short tribute to Charlie Barbat who left us October 12, 2010, a superb documentary on Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, composed of rare documents (photos, memorablia, movies and shows TVs), was screened. Excellent introduction to the show. The New Virginians once in place (Philippe Fessard- gtr - Damien Daigneau - pno - Fred Kolinsky - dms - Gilles Tournon - bs), Thierry Le Coz appeared backs to the audience, as did Eddie during this tour, wearing the sunglasses, leather pants, tartan shirt and a plaid bolero. Without falling into plagiarism, Thierry and the New Virginians (occupying the place of Marty Wilde's Wildcats) goes on superb interpretations of "Hallelujah I Love Her So," "Milk Cow Blues", "What'd I Say" "Twenty Flight Rock," Sweet Little Sixteen, "" C'mon Everybody "," Have I Told You Lately That I Love You "(all recorded for radio / TV " Boy Meets Girls "and" Saturday Club "). Follow "My Way"," "Pretty Girl", "Teenage Heaven," "Jeannie, Jeannie, Jeannie," "My Love To Remember", "Nervous Breakdown", "Skinny Jim" and "Three Steps to Heaven" and a few other pieces of the repertoire of Eddie. Nothing to add than... I get my fee ride for the Leeds Empire or The Ipswich Gaumont! What a trip! After an intermission of 30 minutes and a change of clothes, The New Virginians (instead of the Beat Boys) wearing satin shirts were back on stage to back Travis Ervin wearing all black leather outfit. As in the first part, the songs sung by Gene in 1960 for "Boy Meets Girls" and "Saturday Club" were taken up brilliantly : "Say Mama," "Summertime," "Rocky Road Blues," "Wild Cat" "My Heart" and, of course, "Be Bop A Lula." Among other songs included "Frankie and Johnnie", "Look What You Gone and Done to Me," "Lotta Lovin '", "Dance to the Bop," "I Got A Baby", "Bluejean Bop," "Over The Rainbow "and a great rendition of " Baby Blue ". Damien Daigneau was excellent at the piano and voice support provided to Ervin by him and Fred Kolinsky absolutely remarkable. Philippe Fessard and Gilles Tounon have as usual added a visual and musical dimension much appreciated. Although both artists to accompany had a different directory and style, the group returned with authentic sound and true style of each. Eddie and its easy going way of life, Gene and its rage to survive !The two friends found themselves together on stage to close the program performing "White Lightnin", "Pistol Packin' Mama" and "My Babe". 50 years after this legendary tour with new performers / musicians, magic has functioned perfectly. The New Virginians quality and the vocal talent /showmanship of Thierry and Ervin gave us two hours and half of a rare pleasure.
Hey, there, all you Daddy-Os and Mommy-Os… Hallelujah ! I love them so !

it 50 years ago, the USA, in 1960 and four years after its explosion, Rock'N'Roll, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis or Chuck Berry and Buddy others Holly is slowing the charts. Only Elvis Presley, currently the army remains there. All these Rockers of the first hour then turn to Europe. The old continent is still in its infancy. In France, except for a minority, this style is mostly regarded as a fashionable dance came from the USA. Artists like Henri Salvador and Luis Mariano others try it, more to parody than conviction. Jazzmen meanwhile are lashing on this "sub-style. Things really move with the young Johnny Hallyday, already stung by Rock'N 'Roll. It is in this vein and in 16 years that he recorded his first 45s in March 1960.
England a few steps ahead. Young singers like Marty Wilde, Billy Fury, Cliff Richard or Vince Taylor adhere to this style and get a growing success in the charts, and pass regularly in TV and radio programs. Visits to Britain great American pioneers like Bill Haley & His Comets and Buddy Holly & the Crickets have contributed greatly to put the old Big Ben from Trafalgar Square Albion and all the time rock and roll!
In this climate, in early 1960, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, two of the greatest American Rockers of all time, idols (among others) Johnny Hallyday and other John Lennon, are touring England for the first time. Night after night
is smashing success. Gene Vincent, a famous creator of Be Bop A Lula is at its peak, both vocally as theatrically. Singer weakness, it dramatizes and demonizes his image by appearing dressed all in black leather. It is one of the first if not the first to adopt this outfit. This might seem commonplace today was not in 1960! It gives Rock 'N' Roll one of its largest dimensions.
Eddie Cochran, served by a physical archangel virile rock, and capsized the hearts and amazes the audience with his immense talent as a guitarist. His compositions announce the future of rock. Conversely, Gene Vincent, he is adored by all. It is the revelation of the tour. Young aspiring guitarists like George Harrison (Beatles) and Pete Townshend (Who), and many others attend one or another of his concerts. They later admitted to have been captivated by this prodigy standing before them, Gretsch 6120 orange hands. The term "guitar hero" did not exist in those days, but he should have be invented for him! Overwhelmed by requests
organizers extend the tour day. On April 16, 1960 the two singers can finally leave home a few weeks in the U.S. to relax.
Unfortunately they are victims of a traffic accident in the taxi that brought them back from Bristol to London airport. Gene and the other passengers were injured. But Eddie died of his wounds the next day. He was only 21 years! Gene Vincent still had some tubes in Europe in the early 60s. The wheel spins and then success will be quickly swept away by new styles of the moment. Beatles, Beach Boys and Rolling Stones lead. Persona, bewitching, captivating and unusual singer, it will disappear in 1971 and 36 years after a life lived at a cracking pace.
Nowadays the term Rock'N'Roll is too often employed indiscriminately. The proper expression for musicians - African American early twentieth century (jazz, blues) is primarily a term which will qualify in 1953 (Bill Haley and Elvis Presley) the amalgamation of different styles, different communities. The blues and gospel of black people, country music (then called "hilbilly) whites etc..
This musical project, "Rock'N'Roll Jubilee Memorial, in collaboration with the town of Etampes, the association "Voodoo Doctors" and the club 59 is due to the initiative of club president Claude Speisser 59 (France) and Philippe Fessard, musician and fan of Rock 'n Roll étampois. A tribute to two giants mentioned above, two famous artists: Thierry Le Coz interpreting the repertoire of Eddie Cochran and Travis Ervin to that of Gene Vincent. Both are accompanied by the New Virginains, musicians VOR Ervin Travis.
addition to celebrate the memory of Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, the project primarily aims to discover or rediscover the Rock'N 'Roll '50s. The style that revolutionized the twentieth century, both musically and socially, and has inspired an amazing artist! From the Beatles to a Springsteen today, passing by Johnny Hallyday, Eddy Mitchell and so many others.

succession was thought impossible, but it does is nothing. More than 35 years after the disappearance of GENE VINCENT (1935-71) it is there!
ERVIN TRAVIS is, vocally speaking, the worthy successor to GENE VINCENT, at least the first voice which comes close to mistake. Ervin
discovers the Rock 'n' Roll in the 70s and soon realize that takes its range is close to that of his idol. In the '80s, he founded his first band, "MEMORIES GENE.
But the best is yet to come. The rumor of Ervin's talent begins to swell in the landerneau rock. The release of the superb album 'FROM TIDEWATER TO DALLAS "resoundingly confirms the talent of ERVIN TRAVIS superbly accompanied this time by the" Virginian ". The stage will
consecration in December 2001 at the Salle Wagram in Paris. That evening the fans of the first hour (those who have seen Gene in France at the Star, Olympia, Palais des Sports, Mutuality, Alhambra) are here. Their decision will be unanimous! After the first set of Dante, it amazes not, some have tears in their eyes.
Some time later, they saw their talent rewarded with multiple dates in the UK, including the famous festival in Hemsby, where they triumph in May 2003.
Aujourd'ui Evvin Travis is accompanied by the New Virginians: Fred Kolinsky (drums) Damien Daigneau (piano) and Philippe Fessard (guitar) and Gilles Tournon (bass), two members of famous Virginians with whom he turned for many years (2001/2005).
Ervin Travis & the New Virgians are produced three times last January in England comemoration the 50th anniversary of the UK tour of Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran.

is sometimes argued that "imitation is the highest form of tribute," which is probably true, but this sentence is too often used to try to disguise a lack of personality. If
Ervin Travis should be approached as an imitator, it would be in the best sense, religious in the sense of the term, as those who have dedicated their lives to the imitation of Christ. Ervin is the God that is Gene Vincent (1935-1971). Others had before him, sought to regain the magic that makes inflections Gene rocker most intimately loved by the great initiates, but none has succeeded to slip inside the model's personality, so the song becomes a consequence of feeling, and not vice versa. One thinks here in the Stanislavski method advocating inner awareness, the actor, his character. Wielding the power and sweetness, Gene, the kid from Norfolk, with her golden voice and a soul flayed alive, imposed an image of a rock musician perfect. France, he has always reserved the best host so it is not surprising that it emerges from this country today officiating worthy of his legacy. Ervin Travis is ready, willing and able to support, defend, to recognize and appreciate the finesse of singer absolute most sensitive and most nuanced of any rock history. All
intonations, tremolos, are reconstructed with an attention to detail that takes away all vanity exercise to give it a fascinating depth. Ervin Travis's voice manages to be confused with that of Gene. The experience is unsettling. This work could only accomplish a true love.
